How do I stop Outlook 2003 synchronising folders

I have a stand alone PC and broadband connection using Outlook 2003 which has
been working OK. Now when I send/receive Outlook starts to "synchronise
folders", which causes a time out error when connecting to my ISP server. My
understanding is sychronisation is used with an Exchange Server, so when
sychronising it's never going to find Exchange thus causing the time out.
Any suggestions?

What account types do you have listed when you select Tool > Email Accounts
View/Change existing accounts? (Even with IMAP/POP3, Outlook has to give
some indication that is performing a send/receive.)
