how do I stop outlook from continually synchronising folders?

When I use send/receive on my Outlook - the system says it is synchronising
files and just goes round and round thousands of times using the
receive/send. Has anyone seen this before - if so - how do I stop it?

Synchronising Folders is when OL performs a send/receive.
Check that the auto send/receive is set for not less than 10 minutes
