How do I stop "I" from being capitalized

WORD automatically capitalizes the letter "i" when starting a sentence or
even in a sentence.

I don't want this done (I write a lot of mathematics and we use lower case
"i" to represent a complex number). Is there a way to shut off this feature
(I shut off the Capitalization of the first letter in a new sentence, but
that doesn't do the trick even if "i" is the first such letter).

MB,

Try Tools>AutoCorrect Options>AutoCorrect Tab. Type i in the Replace box.
If an entry replace i with I shows up then delete it.

To preserve your auto capitalizaition sentences, you might consider making
your own autocorrect entry to insert i when you type letter combination.
For example, you could have autocorrect set to replace cn with i. cn is an
easy combination to remember for complex number.

Sounds a bit complex ;)
In Word 2003 (and probably other versions) there is an 'exceptions' tool on
the autocorrect settings dialog. Under 'other corrections' add i to the
list.

what you do is you go under tools --> autocorrect options
then a dialog box will pop up...scroll down until you
see "i" and you can see that that if you put "i" it is
always replaced by "I", so just delete it and that should
take care of your problem
