how do I stop error msg when turning off printer

I am running windows 2000 with all patches. I have an HP 7960 photosmart
printer attached via USB. Motherboard is intel with 875 chipset with latest
drivers. The printer has built-in CF card reader which works as expected.

If I turn off the printer a message (looks like it came from the OS) pops up
that warns me that I have disconnected a device without properly shutting it
down (or words to that effect) and to go to the hardware wizard to properly
shutdown the device so it can be safely disconnected. When I try that the
window that identifies the devices that can be selected for disconnecting is
blank so that isn't going to work.

I don't know if its an issue with the printer drivers or the way windows
2000 is handling USB disconnects.

This doesn't seem to cause any problem - the printer works fine - but I sure
would like to get rid of that message.

Can anyone help and if so, thanks

When you have the print plugged in is there a small icon in the task bar
beside the clock that looks like a green arrow over a grey box? If you
double click that you should get a list of devices attached. Highlight the
printer and click "Stop" it will then tell you you can safetly remove the
printer. Bit of a pain I know. Windows doesn't like thing being just
plugged out of the PC (or in your case switched off) without prior warning.

I know exactly what you are talking about but it is not there. There is an
icon there that is used for that purpose for the CF card slots only...it
doesn't work for the the printer though. The printer is "connected" to a
printer icon but it is only for working with it's property sheets - nothing
about powering off or disconnecting the USB cable.
