How do I stop emails opening automatically

When I go into Outlook it always insists on opening the highlighted email.
How can I stop this?

Don't use the Preview pane. Turn it off. Then consider using
AutoPreview as an alternative which shows a few lines of each e-mail but
in only plain text. Without the Preview pane, you will have to open
(double-click) an e-mail to read it.
