How do I stop a Excel 2007 file opening as read only?

I have created a file in Excel and have copied data into w word file . The
word file reopens and correctly displays the data. However the Excel file
only opens as read only sothat I am unable to to amend or transfer additional
data. Help tells how to create read only files but not how to edit such
files nor does it exlplai how to reopen read only files

browse to where the file is saved, locate the file, right click on it and
choose "properties" from menu, uncheck box that says "read only"
