not "read only" to opened files

Hi there,
..
office 2007 (Excel/Word) is opening/saving files that is already opened in
the network.
..
older offices open this (opened) files as "read only".
..
what´s wrong ?

Unless the file is Shared, the second copy of the file to be opened will be
read only.

I'm not a big fan of Shared workbooks, but I can't speak for others.
