how do i set up address book to merge without using outlook

could somone please tell me how i can set up an address book in word 2003. i
want to do a merge and i don't want to use outlook?
 
What kind of merge? You can use Access, Excel, or even Word (among many
other file typtes) as your data source for a Word mail merge.

I need to know how. I send out information for a non profit org. that i am
on the board of I have excell but not really sure how to use it. and when i
go into word envelopes....it only lets me use outlook. thank you for replying
eileene
