how do I set up a ppt file so that on opening it automatically starts slide show?

Save it as a PowerPoint Show by either changing the extension from .ppt
to .pps or by choosing Save As from the File menu and next to Save As
Type scrolling down to find PowerPoint Show (*.pps).
