How do I set options for deleting text?

When I delete text with the backspace key in MS Word, the spaces between
characters text to the left of the cursor appears to widen, and then the text
appears to "jump" to the right towards the cursor. I find this really
distracting. I prefer to "drag" text to the right of the cursor as I delete
text to the left of the cursor. I'm sure that there's a simple solution, but
I already tried hitting the "insert" key on my keyboard, and that didn't
help.

Any suggestions?
