I feel like an idiot but I can not get the newsgroup
search window to find ANYTHING. I type in a subject that
I know should produce results but it ALWAYS comes up with
nothing! What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Greg

Go to google.com, click on groups and pick the newsgroup you want to search,
works great.

That did not help! OE found very differnt newsgroups plus
the list was terribly not user friendly. There has got to
be a way to get this to work!

Thanks

Greg

The newsgroups are the exact same in OE or on the web interface. What part
of OE is not "user friendly"? What part of the search is not working for
you? What terms are you searching for?

Not necessarily. What newsgroups he sees in OE depends on what
newsserver he configures it for. He might be using a server that
doesn't carry this newsgroup.

Greg, if you haven't done so, set Outlook Express to use the
server msnews.microsoft.com. You will find this newsgroup,
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, there. And you will find
Outlook Express to be much *more* user-friendly than the web
interface.

I had same question a while ago. I will not use Outlook,
So I guess that means search is unavailable to anyone in
the same boat. I think that providing this forum is a
wonderful thing, my only criticism is that search would be
beneficial to both the people who provide help and those
who need it. The repetition of similar questions requiring
similar answers is counter productive on both sides.
Seems to me that "Search" should be at the top of the page
where a person could enter Subject (like in this post)
and search, (like that on www.msn.com) would return hits
excluding the EBay & Amazon hits.

First, you mean Outlook Express, not Outlook. Outlook is a
different product, and does not do newsgroups.

There are *many* choices of newsreaders, and many of them are
downloadable freeware. If you don't want to use Outlook Express,
that's fine--choose another one. But insisting on using no
newsreader and instead using the web interface just hampers you
in using newsgroups.

Did you try searching the Google groups as was suggested? Also,
you're using the web interface (CDO) which is almost useless in
finding information. You say OE found very different newsgroups?

Did you point OE to msnews.microsoft.com? Try going directly to the
Microsoft server. (msnews.microsoft.com) Then download a list of
groups. Once you have a list of groups to choose from, you can
subscribe. You know the name of this group right?
(microsoft.public.windowsxp.general) Once you subscribe to the
group, a search is easy.

Not everything in this world is user friendly. Even ATM machines can
be confusing sometimes.

Click on the link above, as long as OE is your default newsreader,
you'll be able to read this group in OE. Once your done downloading the
first batch of message, right click on this groups name in the folders
bar along the left side of the OE window, then left click on subscribe.

After that, then go to Tools > Options > Read tab, then uncheck Get
_____ headers at a time, so you get all the messages from that point
forward. There's a way to reset the group so that you can see all the
message that are available on the server, but you have gotten enough
hand-holding for one thread. RTFM!
