How do I restore my word document to an earlier time.

I don't know how, but I didn't save changes to my word document before it was
closed. Can I restore it to an earlier time before it was closed? The
system restore time is before I created the document, so that won't help me.

Afaik windows system restore has nothing to do with user documents. So even
if the time was allright you couldn't do what you want. Your last resort is
Word Auto Recovery.
If it was properly set there is a way of retreiving data.

Read http://www.amset.info/tips/office-recovery.asp

Otherwise, I am afraid that if the document or changes weren't saved there
is no chance to retreive it.

You can retrieve the previous saved version IF you have previously enabled
"Always create backup copy" on the Save tab of Tools | Options. If this
option is already enabled, set "Files of type" in Word's File Open dialog to
All Files and look for a file named "Backup of <filename>.wbk."
