How do I replace a 'symbol' with another 'symbol' in a large text

I have a large text file (about 200 pages) where I make heavy use of a
'symbol' from 'monotype sorts' a font from MS word pre-2003. I have tried to
replace that symbol with another symbol from the webdings library, but the
'find - replace' dialogue box won't let me do this. How can I replace 500 -
1000 instances of the same symbol to another?

Actually you can, but Word/Windows makes it difficult.

One way:

Type the replacement Wingdings char somewhere in the doc, select the
original char, then launch Find & Replace. The selected char should be in the
Find What: field automatically. Click back in the doc (while F&R is still
open), select the replacement char you typed & copy it. Click back into the
Replace With: field & use Ctrl+V to paste it in (Paste button & menu won't
work, as you have probably found). Proceed from there.
