How do I remove bullets from line numbering?

Sometimes when I add continuous line numbering to a Word document (MS Word
2003) I get bullets with each number. How do I remove the bullets?

I'm having some difficult imagining this... I take it you're clicking the
button in the toolbar for numbering?

Do you see the bullets in print preview, as well? (Do they print?)

With the cursor in such "bulleted numbers", if you go to Format/Bullets and
Numbering is what you're seeing represented in one of the "preview" pictures?

If you choose a different picture, do they go away?

Hi Cindy:

Thanks for your response.

Yes, I see the bullets & numbers for "line numbering" in print preview and
different views, and they print. I am unable to format them. - I guess
because it is under the "line numbering" function.

What is strange and I guess good is this only happens intermittently, I just
don't know why it happens.

It's a mystery to me; I've never heard of anything like this, before. You might
start keeping a record of the circumstances under which it occurs (certain
documents, using certain styles...)

I'd be inclined to say something has become damaged and try Help/Detect and
Repair. I might also try renaming Normal.dot to get a clean copy.
