Hi -

I was trying to help a friend who as a broken Microsoft Installer
installing XP Pro over top of his XP Home (i.e. Upgrading him) but the
process went wrong, and now when he boots his computer he is prompted
to start "XP Home" or "XP Pro". The XP Home still works, and the XP Pro
does not.

How do I remove the option that required human interaction from the
boot process (it's defaulting to the broken XP Pro).

Is this an edit to the boot.ini?

Thanks in advance

Click Start / Run / notepad c:\boot.ini, then remove the
line you no longer wish to see.

Does the default line need to be edited to the Home partition if there is
only one operating system listed?

Click Start / Run / notepad c:\boot.ini, then remove the
line you no longer wish to see.

I wanted to try this to see if it would stop the non-working English XP
from showing up at boot, but when I opened c:\boot.ini, I couldn't tell
which line was which. Both XP versions have exactly the same name. I
chickened out.

Easy: Change each name slightly (the bit to the right of the =,
surrounded by double quotes), then reboot the machine and
see which one is which. Like so:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="1: Microsoft Windows XP
Professional"
