How do I put a password on Outlook so only I can open my mail

If someone else is using my computer how do I stop them opening my outlook
and reading my mail. Can I actually put in a password to open outlook?

You can set a password for the PST file but if you do not have multiple
user accounts, just a default user to use the PC, the password will be
remembered from the time you opened the file within Outlook.


However, the best way IMO is to use multiple user accounts as part of
the OS set up if you are using Windows. The most secure way is to do
this on Win2k/WINXP as you then can also use NTFS file system for
security. Anyone logging into windows with a user name different to
yours will automatically have their own file area and more importantly
application specific settings, including Outlook and the location of the
PST files or different MSExchange settings for their own user name.
Putting your email PST file in your own area will also stop somebody
"browsing" for the file and opening it up (assuming the PST file is not
password protected).

you can password the personal store, provided you close outlook before they
get on the computer - or lock the computer and make them use their own
windows logon.

right click on outlook today icon in the folder list and choose properties,
then advanced. Use a password you won;t forget as it's hard to recover
forgotten passwords.

Assuming the PC is set up for multiple users!

Without or without multiple users set up, I seem to remember that even
after closing Outlook, on re-opening it remembers the last opened PST
file(s) and any password(s) you entered to open it(them). Is this still
true?

Password protect your account on the computer. Make them use their own
Windows usernames.

that would only happen if outlook didn't close properly because another
program is keeping it open, but running hidden. Check task manager to insure
it's closed or get http://www.sunflowerhead.com/software/knockout

If the pc is not set up for multiple users, create logons for each regular
user and a generic logon for less frequent users. It's very easy with
windows xp and when Fast User Switching is enabled, you don't even need to
close programs or log off, just switch to another user account.
