Hi Graham,

My problem is that items in my autocorrect in Word 2003 are periodically
cleared.

After reading other people's submissions, I'm wondering whether, when my
computer crashes and asks me whether I wish to save changes to normal
template, should I be answering "yes"?

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for your quick response re my incorrectly formatted question.

Cheers,

Russ

If Word crashes it leaves a load of dross behind - so see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm

Following a crash, it is probably wiser to answer 'no' to the prompt about
normal.dot when you open Word again. If the standard normal.dot template is
replaced by a new default one then many of your customisations will be lost.
It would be worth keeping a backup copy of your normal.dot file somewhere
away from Word.

Only say yes to a prompt to save normal.dot when closing when you are sure
that there are changes that you want to save. That is the benefit of having
Word prompt - you get the choice. Some autocorrect entries are stored in
normal.dot. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/FilesToBackup.htm

Word 2003 is much more stable that some earlier versions and should not be
crashing frequently. You need to establish what causes it to crash.
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm may help.

Hi Graham,

Thanks very much for your help re backing up autocorrect.

A further problem I am having is that when I use the file you provided to
back up my autocorrect (wholly effective on the first use), subsequent saves
are not capturing new items added to my autocorrect.

Any thoughts?
