I have a large plotter printer than can handle 60 by 120 posters. Most of
the researchers know and use power point to make 54 by 40 posters. The
problem arises when we try to make the poster larger. How can we achieve the
60 by 120 demensions using powerpoint?

Since Powerpoint limits you to 56" x 56", you will need to use another
application. Do you have access to MS Publisher? Publisher allows documents
up to 20 feet x 20 feet, so your 60" x 120" poster would be no problem.

In Publisher, open a new document and go to File/Page Setup. Under the
"Layout" tab, go to "Publication Type" and scroll down to poster. Then enter
the dimensions to the right using the " symbol after your numbers so it knows
you're talking inches and not feet. (i.e. 60").

You'll need to make sure you adjust the printer/paper settings as well, or
else it will print your poster across 100 sheets of 8.5"x11" paper...
