How do I prevent Outlook from opening mail that I don't click on?

In the older version of Outlook, mail only opened if I double-clicked it. In
the latest version, Outlook opens items that I don't click on at all. I'm
not entirely sure what's happening, but I noticed that if I skip and click on
the one below it, the one I skipped sometimes opens. I like to Mark Items
Unread as reminders, and can't maintain them as unread. Also, Outlook opened
some phishing items and that has caused me problems. I've learned now that
if I right-click items and delete, I'm ok. Clicking them once to delete
opens them.

are you using:

1. Outlook 2003?
2. the Reading Pane?

if you answered YES to both, just fix the default setting here:

Tools | OPtions | Other | Reading Pane. Set it to not mark items as read
after X seconds and set it to not Mark Items as Read when selection
changes.

I hope this helps you at least a little bit!
