HOW DO I PREDERMINE SOFTWARE COMPATABILITY BEFORE INSTALLING VISTA

I am running Windows XP on a 4 month old Dell XPS computer. Before I switch
to VISTA, I need to know if a very important software program will run on
VISTA.

I understand from the Computer Guy on KFI640 radio program that there is
some way I can download from Microsoft a trial version of VISTA which will
allow me to see if this software will run on VISTA. However, I can not find
any mention of running software on a trial of VISTA at the Microsoft website.

Can anyone tell me how to predermine VISTA compatibility with software? I
am a novice, so I would appreciate baby step instructions.

Many thanks to anyone who can help me. Mac

There is no current trial version available for download.
To confirm if the application is supported on Vista go to the application
vendors web site and check there or e-mail their technical support staff.

Download the Vista Upgrade Advisor. It will scan your present system
and spit out things is doesn't like. Just take with a heavy dose of
salt. Almost everything it don't like, even if it says it shouldn't
matter, WILL often matter once you actually try to install Vista. It
is much more finky than XP. Find it on the Microsoft site or Goggle.

If I can add, and someone else mentioned it, do not rely on the advisor, it
doesn't pick up everything. Best option is to check manufacturers site of
any critical application.

Very true. The advisor can not possibly have an understanding of all
applications. So if it does not mention a specific app, then don't assume
that app will work.

The only information that's valid with the upgrade advisor are the specifics
in what it tells you what WILL be a problem.

For example, if the upgrade advisor tells you your anti-virus program is not
compatible then you know not to install it on Vista. However if that's the
ONLY thing it tells you then you can't assume everything else will work
without any problems. You'll still need to research those as well.

If the Computer is Mission Critical i.e essential for your work or business
"Do Not Upgrade" to Vista. Because you will never know or be able to find
out 100% what will or won't work until you do it and by then it will be too
late. Also upgrades are not a good idea, always do a clean installs. Also
installing software on a clean install is often more successful.
