how do I open spreadsheet xls file

I have tried and tried to open an attatchment Excel spreadsheet (file
extension:xls)
and it just won't work.I can't find out what program created it.Any help
would be great.

You mean an email attachment? Try to save it from email to your hard disk. For security, some
email programs can be changed to prevent opening of attachments.
