until today, I have been able to open multiple browser
windows at the same time. Now, even if I attmept to open
a link in a new window, the old window will close.
thanks for any help

Tim,
First take a look at any other program which might be blocking new windows.
Programs such as:
Yahoo companion, Google toolbar, ad-blockers, internet security, etc

Next... Internet Options> Advanced, is "Reuse windows" unchecked?

Less likely, but check for spyware and parasites:

Hope this helps,

The "reuse windows" is unchecked.

I first disabled then uninstalled a pop up blocker.

I have run spybot and the systme appears to be clean.

any additional ideas?

.

Ad-aware might find something that Spybot didn't find.

Any other programs which might be causing this? (firewall, antivirus,
internet security)

Disable, for diagnostic purposes, any program running in the background.

I don't think this is the fix, but re-registering these files (Url.dll,
Mshtml.dll, Actxprxy.dll, Oleaut32.dll, etc)
won't hurt:
