how do i open a .doc as a default file with word

Hi,

I've got some .doc documents saved on my computer, but when i double click
on it, it just opens with wordpad. So i right-click on the document in
question, and select "open with", then search for "winword". But my laptop
still doesn't link the document(s) with winword. As a result, i'm having to
open word separately, and then use the 'open' function in word.

Can anybody help?
