How do I open a compacted Outlook Express file saved on CD?

I backed up Outlook Express files from an old computer onto a CD. I now want
to be able to open those backed up files thru either Outlook 2003 or Outlook
Express on my new computer. I can't open the .dbx files I have saved. Any
suggestions?

So WHY can't you open the saved .dbx files? Keeping it a secret for some
reason? Looks like we're supposed to guess. My guess is that Outlook
complains that it cannot open the file, probably because it needs write
access.

CD is not a complete device acronym. My guess is that it is a CD-ROM or
CD-RW drive. "ROM" means read-only. "R" means ReWritable but it is still a
ROM device otherwise. Any files on a read-only device will also be
read-only. Outlook wants write access to any .pst file that it opens. That
means you must copy the file to some other device on which the file can be
opened for write access. Copy the file from the CD-ROM drive to your hard
drive and make sure to remove the read-only attribute from the file.

I don't know why I can't open the file. It's a .dbx file (Outlook Express).
I copied the file from the CD into My Documents on another computer (with
Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook both on the system). It gives me the
"open with" box, and Outlook is not an option to open the file with. Instead
of backing up my emails this way, I guess I should have chosen File/Save as
instead. But my computer kept crashing and I wanted to get things saved
quickly before I lost everything.

Outlook. Outlook Express. So WHICH program are you using? Outlook uses
..pst files. Outlook Express uses .dbx files. This group is for Outlook,
not Outlook Express. Sounds like you are jumbling a bunch of unrelated
programs together.
