When I try to open a Access 2000 file in Access 97 I keep getting an error
stating "Unrecognized database format...." How do I go around this and open
my file to work out of Access 97?

You don't.

Up do A97, all versions of Access used completely different formats, and
none was able to read future versions.

You could go the other way: use Access 2000 to save the database in A97
format:
Tools | Database Utilities | Convert

yoiu don't. microsoft change the filing system in 2000. 97
and 2000 are not compatible.
you can convert a 97 db to 2k but you can't convert a 2k
db to 97.you can open a 97 db in 2k but you cannot edit it
unless you convert it to 2k. you cannot open a 2k db in 97
because of the filing system difference.
All version of access after 2k(at least to xp) use the 2k
file format.
not the answer you want but that is the way it is.
sorry.

you can't convert a 2k db to 97

You actually can, if you have Access 200x installed: Tools... Convert
Database... Convert to Earlier Version.

Have you tried creating a new DB in 97 in importing all the objects?

Depending on how much the macros have been utilized will determine you rate
of success. you should be able to get to the tables at the least

That won't make any difference. Access 97 cannot read the Access 2000 file
format.

Can the database not be converted to an earlier version and then opened?
(Providing he has access to Access 2000)

Yes.

I think Douglas' main point was about the incorrect info. in Todd's reply.
