How do I modify the Vista logon screen?

I wish to get rid of the logon screen's fancy wallpaper, silly
pictures and the list of users recognised by my machine. How can I
replace the mess with a simple 'legacy' logon screen a la Win 2000,
etc. I guess it's yaers of working in a networked environment that
makes the Vista logon screen look to garish. Or maybe just good
taste?

Microsoft has removed the classic Windows NT style logon screen in
Windows Vista. You can no longer hit CTRL+ALT+Delete to get to a logon
box where you can type in the username and password. Instead you have
to enable the alternative logon screen to restore this capability, but
you
won't get exactly what you want. Here goes:

Click on the Start Button, key in secpol.msc and hit Enter.

Navigate through Local Policies and Security Options.

Locate and right click on "Interactive logon: Do not display last user
name" and select Properties.

Select Enable and hit OK.
close Local Security Policy editor.

Log off and you will see the new logon screen.

Tip: If you need to log into a domain sign in with "domain\username".
If you want to log into a local computer account, sign in with
".\local_username".

Try the program at the below link ... Simple to use, works great...

Enjoy!

Thanks, //ceed, for your clear instructions, now implemented! I can
see nothing in Vista's 'Policies' or regedit to modify/remove the
logon screen wallpaper... Or have I missed something?

Thanks too to SeaJay for the 3rd party way to change the wallpaper. I
installed it and the 'orange nebula' looks v. dramatic on my wide-
screen VDU!

Set the value of this key to null and the log-in screen background is
now a solid color:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

Disclaimer: Editing the registry could potentially render your system
unable to boot/run, so make sure you back up your registry and set a
restore point before doing so.

Which particular key in there? I tried SCRNSAVE.EXE - only because it
was the only one with a likely file name in it - but that failed. I
tried UserPreferenceMask but that did nothing. Or are you saying to
wipe the whole lot?!

Is there a way of just entering "username" instead of 'domain\username' when
users log into a domain (ala Pre-Vista)?
