How do I lock my freakin' Toolbars? I have to rearrange them every

I open this Evil program they call Word. Why can't everybody use LINUX?

Because Linux is merely an Operating System and not a word-processor.

If you want a basic word-processor that you can type a simple letter without
all of the features of Word, Windows does come with WordPad. It should be
under "Start", "Programs", "Accessories".

As far as Word is concerned, if your toolbars are moving every time you open
Word (as your Subject line states), you probably have a problem with your
global template file (normal.dot). This file maintains all of your normal
settings like toolbar locations, page size view, etc. It could be locked
due to a computer lockup with Word open and it is unable to change your
toolbar location settings.

If you would provide a little more specifics about your problem, like which
toolbars, what you are trying to do, which version of Word you are using,
etc., we would be more than happy to provide instructions to fix.

I'm very familiar with Linux ( and the available word processing programs
that are available for that OS) and Microsoft Office. However, because most
companies still use Microsoft Windows, we work with what we have.

To the point at hand; I have Adobe Acrobat toolbars, Time Matters toolbars
as well as the standard and formatting toolbars that need to remain locked in
place. However, when I close Word and open it again, the toolbars are
rearranged. I have tried saving the normal.dot global template several times
to no avail. I simply want Word to look and feel the same every time I open
it, which is several hundred times per day.

You need to speak with the people that made the add-ins. This is
attributable to them and not to Word.

Adobe's in particular is poorly written and fussy about where it places its
toolbar and while I don't know much about Time Matters, I would guess that
it competes for position. It might help if you controlled the order the
add-ins load, by renaming them. See

background.

Thanks for the update. I have the adobe Acrobat toolbar and it pretty much
stays put each time I open Word. I am beginning to wonder if your
normal.dot file is locked. Do you have "Show Hidden Files and Folders" set
in Windows Explorer? If not, set it. Then make sure Word is closed and do
a search for a files named "~$normal.dot". If you find it, delete it.
Re-open Word and try rearranging your toolbars, closing Word, then
re-opening to see if they stay. The one option I do have set (under "View",
"Toolbars", "Customize", "Option" TAB) is the "Show Standard and Formatting
toolbars on two rows" checked.

Holler back if find a solution or need further assistance. Sorry about the
"rant back", but after a "rant", this can clear the air and get to the
problem at hand. Good Luck!

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate a good rant now and then. All in good
humor. Anyway, I have four computers and all run XP Pro (Licensed, of course)
and the only problems I have are with Word, as it is a very complex program.
My posting name says it all.

I am having trouble with my Standard and Formatting toolbars disappearing. It
appears to be related to using Word as my Outlook e-mail editor. Every time I
start Word, only the "e-mail" toolbar is visible. I tried stopping the use of
Word as my e-mail editor and then the Word toolbars came up normally when I
used Word. As soon as I turned it back on, the (nearly useless) "e-mail"
toolbar came back. I'm sure I could write a macro in Normal.dot to make the
normal toolbars visible, but this seems like it shouldn't be necessary and I
don't really want to be prompted about allowing macros to run every time I
start Word.

If you don't want to be prompted about macros, set the macro security to
trust installed templates and add-ins and don't save macros in documents.
Save them in templates. Set the security level to medium.

As for the toolbar issue, I don't use Word as my e-mail editor usually, but
for the sake of experiment, I found that if I set Word as e-mail editor and
created a new message, the standard and formatting toolbars were not
displayed, but having switched them on (right click the toolbar area and
check them) they stayed on and they are still on after shutting down both
Outlook and Word and restarting.

Word used as a standalone is unaffected and the e-mail toolbar is a toggle
setting.

For e-mail use the Outlook editor is quite capable and avoids the issue
entirely.

Hi Bill: can you help with a simple problem? I have am unable to use the
"Show Standard and Formatting toolbars on two rows" option when I open Word:
the check box is greyed-out, and I have no idea why. This has just started,
without any concious actions on my behalf. If I access the options through
"tools" or "view" I get the same result: a greyed- out check box. Is there
something wrong with my global template? Does anyone know? Can you send a
bit of advice to me at - (e-mail address removed)? Thanks

The only thing that will be sent to your email address, if you use it in a
forum such as this, is spam. This is not a help desk. You must come here for
the replies.

The probable reason for your dilemma is a minor corruption in the Word data
key in the registry. Delete or rename that key. -
