I have windows XP home on my new computer and want to load
windows 98 on to the computer as well. I have seen it done
before where the user has the option of which to use when
they turn on the computer. I tried the normal install
procedure for windows 98 and it almost deleted all my
existing files in xp. I really need to know how to sort
this out so that I can load files on both windows versions?

Unless you want to format your system and start fresh, or if you only have
restore media, you will need third party partitioning and boot manager
software.

Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address box.
Boot manager Links
BootIT NG from Terabyte

I will continue to read the information you provided but
do you think that the primary problem first time round was
not creating the partition before trying to install
windows 98?

SO with XP already installed I can create a new partition
using advanced options, and once that second partition
exists (D:) I can load windows 98 onto that new drive
without affecting the drive on which the original windows
XP files exist on the original partition (C:).

Previously I simply put in the windows 98 install CD and
went through it using the suggested options. It ended up
creating a partition itself during the install procedure,
but then refused to enter it and said that no drive
existed at all. I just reloaded windows XP and deleted the
partition which then reloaded all my original files and
settings.

It really helps if you quote enough of the previous reply to continue the
thread.
I can't remember the original question, but you will need third party
software to create the dual boot without completely starting from scratch.

The reason that you need to "starting from scratch" is because you must
install win 98 first. As mentioned the only other way around is to use a
third party software.

Not only that but you *must* have a separate partition of the hard disk
in which to have the second system. Trying to make the two share in one
partition is going to give big trouble

You need to install Windows 98 first, then install Windows XP. Or else, use
a third party boot loader.
