I would like to insert a link in an excel document to a word document; both
documents are posted in the same public folder. I've tried several ways, but
link does not work. Please advise.

That's not possible.

That's not gonna work. You really shouldn't use a Public Folder folder to
store files in. You can setup a normal folder share for that. Storage wise
that would also be far more efficient.

We are using them so that remotely connected employees can see information.
They are small documents. What do you mean when you say "normal folder
share"?

Like a networkshare. Using a SharePoint site or setting up a VPN connection
is a more flexible solution and allows you to link to other documents within
a document.

We had a sharepoint site but the calendar does not work for us. We are using
Outlook and an exchange server to solve the problem-all employees work
remotely and this links to mobile devices much better. I have no idea what a
VPN connection is. (And please don't say ask your IT dept. because there
isn't one.) There is a server administrator but he not available for
questions so I keep ending up on this site, seeking help. Thanks.

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network or in more practical terms; a connection
to the corporate office which allows you to access all the internal
resources like you were using a computer in the building itself. It has to
be set up by your network admin though.
