document workspaces vs normal document folders (2)

I've been testing the various facilities of Sharepoint 2.0 on our test server.

What are the differences of using a Document Workspace
vs just having the document in a folder ?

It seems the only way to "link" a document for "get updates"
is with a Document Workspace.

We have a lot of Word docs sitting in various project folders,
and haven't used workspaces.... so I started playing with them.

I can see that if you have a local Word doc, then "Get Updates"
appears to merely download another copy
and use the standard MS Word updating & merging features
just like emailing it around as an attachment.... right ?

So, does using a Sharepoint Document Workspace make that function easier ?
Or, what are the advantages, differences, or even downsides
between using a Document Workspace vs just in a Sharepoint folder ?

Also, it seems like a person has to get a local document copy prior to being
able
to "Get Updates" and no easy way to just drag down the latest copy
AND still have it be linked back to the workspace.... the linking breaks easily
?
BUT, maybe I missed the proper logistical sequence.

What about several folks working on the doc at the same time;
how are all the changed local copies reconciled with each other
via the main Document Workspace copy.... seems fragile.
