Word attachments will not open in Outlook 2007

When I get a message with a Word (.doc) attachment, I cannot open it.

I have reinstalled both Outlook and Word v2002, but this did not help.

Exact sequence of events:

Click on message with Word .doc attachment, opens a new Outlook Window that
shows two attachments as Tabs:
testing.doc (24KB) [This has a MS Word Icon]
att00022.txt (210B) [This has a Notebook Icon]

Clicking once on the testing.doc gives me this message below:

This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for
it.
Browse for previewers online

Double clicking on the testing.doc Tab gives me an "Opening Mail Attachment"
dialog box, with Open, Save and Cancel being the button options.

I click on Open and it opens MS Word 2003 to a blank workspace. Not even a
blank document, just a blank workspace.

If I click Save, then save the file, then opening that file opens Word again
to a blank workspace.

However, if I drag that file to a clean MS Word document, the file opens
cleanly.

I have done the repair install (my first step) and have now uninstalled and
re-installed Outlook 2007, with no change in the outcome.

I just ran the diagnostics again, and it reports:

The Diagnostic Tests found no problems.
Diagnostics Run: 5
Diagnostics with problems: 0
Diagnostics that took corrective actions: 0

I hope this gives you enough information to help me.

You are confusing in your version numbers mainly because of your 2nd line.
Am I to understand that you are actually using Outlook 2007 and Word 2003?
If I click Save, then save the file, then opening that file opens Word
again
to a blank workspace.
This would make it a Word issue as Outlook isn't even involved in the
process when you open a Word document from your Desktop.
This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for
it.
Correct. The previewer for Word is new in Word 2007 and you are using Word
2003.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Your are right, the 2003 version of Word.

But what I don't understand is that the attachments come directly from Word
2003, NOT Word 2007. Plus the fact that I when I double-click on the
attached file in Explorer, it STILL does not open correctly. This is and
remains a Word 2003 file from my reckoning.

OK, so now where do I get this previewer?

But what I don't understand is that the attachments come directly from
Word
2003, NOT Word 2007.
That is irrelevant to the issue.
Plus the fact that I when I double-click on the
attached file in Explorer, it STILL does not open correctly.
Which make troubleshooting Outlook irrelevant as well. The attachment could
be scr*wed up by a virus scanner doing incoming mail scans though.
Disable/uninstall this integration and try again.
See http://www.msoutlook.info/question/20

Do you only have issues with this doc-file?
Can you still create new doc-files in Word 2003 and open them directly from
Explorer after closing Word?
OK, so now where do I get this previewer?
Buy Word 2007. As I said, support for the Windows/Outlook previewer feature
has been added first in Word 2007. Word 2003 doesn't have this feature.

I have a similar computer on the same network with the exact same software
versions. When I click on a word.doc attachment, I still get the "no
previewer" message. Double clicking on the word.doc Tab gives me an "Opening
Mail Attachment" dialog box, with Open, Save and Cancel being the button
options.
I click on Open, get a small warning, and then the file opens perfectly into
MS Word 2003 with no problems.

Symantec Endpoint Protection on both computers with the "Outlook
Auto-Protect" feature disabled.
Do you only have issues with this doc-file?
These issues are with ANY .doc file created with MS Word 2000, 2002, 2003,
etc.
Can you still create new doc-files in Word 2003 and open them directly from
Explorer after closing Word?
Yes

Thanks again for all your help and attention to my problem.
