How do I keep the indentation consistent when using the numbering

I just installed a brand new Microsoft on a brand new computer. The program
is not corrupted . . . but . . .

When using the numbering feature, If I type #1 and hit tab, the numbering
begins. when I hit the return I get #2 and the left hand margin is e xactly
the same as #1. But when I hit #3, the indentation changes and the #3 starts
at the left hand margin instead of being consistent with #1 and #2. If on
the other hand I leave some spaces on the line before I hit #3, then all the
numbers that follow are consistent with #1. How can I make them all have the
same indentation?

It is more satisfactory to apply the List Number style (modified, if
necessary, to meet your requirements) rather than depend on Word's
IntelliSense.

Well, it used to be simple. You could go to Format | Style, select the
style, and apply it. Unfortunately, in Word 2002, you have to set the Styles
and Formatting task pane to display All Styles, hope that that is one of the
subset of "all styles" that Word includes under this misnomer, and then
select it from the list. See
