How do I keep Outlook from downloading duplicate emails?

so everytime i send/recieve on outlook 2003, it starts downloading all my
emails on the server from the beginning... so everytime i want just my newest
emails, i get that plus a copy to everyone of my more than 5000 emails on the
server. i still want to keep a copy of the email on the server without
having to download each one everytime.

can you help me please? it takes liek 5 hours to download all my emails and
then a whole lot more time just to delete the duplicates.
