How do I install Equation Editor in Word if I do not have the CD-R

Hi,

I've gone through the steps via add/remove programs and it starts to install
but then a box appears telling me I need to insert the "Microsoft Office XP
Professional CD-ROM". Problem is my computer came with MS Office installed
so I have no such CD-ROM.

I'm studying engineering at university and really need an equation editor to
write my notes. Can anyone help me?

Even if Office came preinstalled, the vendor is required to supply you with
a CD. It may not be obvious that that's what it is, so carefully examine
everything that came with your computer. It's also possible that the install
files are on your HD somewhere; if you can figure out where, you can point
the installation to this location instead.

It is my understanding that whoever sold you your computer should
provide you with a means to install all software that came with it
(otherwise, what would you do in case of a crash ...?).

If you need a lot of those, and for some time, you might want to
investigate the "full" product (MathType, which comes as a Word Add-in),
and (of course ) LaTeX.

This question comes up once a week or so on the newsgroups, so I'm surprised
you didn't find the answer when you searched through the newsgroup archives
to see if anyone else has had the same problem. The short answer to your
question is "you can't". You need the CD-ROM to re-install Office or to add
components to your previous installation.

Sure. Download the evaluation version of MathType from the link in my sig.
It's a "30-day evaluation", but it will work indefinitely. It's just that
many of the features will be disabled after 30 days, but I suspect "MathType
Lite" (as the post-30-day version is called) will be sufficient for your
undergraduate studies. Be aware though, that if you send a file to someone
else, he or she will need as a minimum the MathType fonts installed in order
to view your equations.
