How do I insert a word count onto a document?

Is there a way to insert a word count directly onto a document, instead of
just displaying and copying it? For assignments it would save time and it
seems like it should be possible, but I cant work out how. I am interested to
know for both Word 2002 and 2003 if it is different.

Insert a DocProperty field - { DOCPROPERTY Words }
Note that you will have to update it manually. You can use the code at

The NumWords field will do this for you. Use Insert | Field to insert (or
just press Ctrl+F9 and type NUMWORDS between the braces).
