How do I insert a listener box (user-filled field) in a template?

I am revising a very old template for my company that is stored as an MS Word
template, presents to the user as a read-only document, and has gray
"unbreakable" spaces that the user replaces with text. A tab moves the cursor
from each field to the next. I do not find this feature in any dropdown or
Help discussion.

A form of that type is a "protected" form (sometimes called an online form
because it's completed on the computer rather than on paper, not because it
has anything to do with the Internet). The gray spaces are form fields.

Read http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=22 for a short
tutorial about protected forms.

To add another field, you first need to open the template itself (not a
document based on the template) and unprotect it, by clicking Tools >
Unprotect Document and then clicking the Stop Protection button in the task
pane. Alternatively, display the Forms toolbar and click the Lock icon to
turn it off. Add the field as described in the tutorial, protect the
document again, and save the template.

This description presumes that you're using Word 2003 or earlier. If you
have Word 2007, these facilities are on the Developer tab of the ribbon,
which is hidden unless you go to Office Button > Word Options > Popular and
set the option to display the tab.
