windows xp pro wrote the message files to a CDRW when i needed to reinstall
windows, but it has made them read only without asking me. how do i get my
mail out of there and put it in the folder on my computer?

Files copied to cdrw are read only by default, copy files to hd, in explorer
check file properties and remove read only flag.
In OE import your msg store/files
(PS not using OE myself I would suggest copying the files to a temp hd
location and not the OE folders)

Ask the experts in an OE newsgroup.

You must Copy the DBX files to the HDD of the machine > Right-click on them
& remove the Read Only attribute before attempting to import them via OE
File > Import > Messages.

The file FOLDERS.DBX *must* be in the back-up set for Import to work.

I have already explained that it isn't letting me do that. why do you keep
repeating the same posts? Obviously right clicking and changing security and
properties is not working, it is disallowing access and this has something to
do with XP's CD burning software.

If those things did not help me before, they are not going to suddenly help.
I need a way to access whatever is causing even my administrator account to
not have access to change the permissions, by the way it is isn't xp home. it
is XP pro.

If there is not some other file settings that can be changed, probably the
only way is if there is some software that allows me to read my e-mails from
those files and forward them to outlook express. Preferably something that
allows me to select multiple e-mails and forward them.

PA Bear was quite correct in pointing you to a link that shows
you how to seize ownership of these files. If you get an "Access
denied" message then this is the only way to deal with this issue.

After seizing ownership, you may have to clear the read-only
attribute of these files.

Using another program to read your EMail would be a waste
of time and effort. If you are logged on as Administrator then
you can access these file. Been there, done that!

Nobody is correct when i already explained that i already tried it. I tried
it the first time it was suggested. It didn't work. I even had tried it
before asking. But after it was suggested, I tried doing it from the
Administrator account. I did exactly as it says and went to the security tab
and properties and removed the simplified sharing or whatever like it said
even, but was still getting the "access denied message."

The fact is, it isn't letting me seize ownership.

"Simplified file sharing" and "Seizing ownership" are two
unrelated topics. I suggest you explain to the group how
you tried to seize ownership of these files / folders.

I'm sorry, but you have /not/ mentioned Taking Ownership of the files in
your posts to this thread or in your thread in IE6 Browser newsgroup
(http://snipurl.com/1ew2c), Joshua.

Also, as my colleague Frank Saunders pointed out in the other thread, the
CDs themselves may be flawed.

actually i mentioned permissions and attributes several times.

but i notice i am getting a message when windows starts up now. maybe it is
related?

it says run dll error. then it says access is denied to knhtqxnx.dll

is it possible there is some way to browse these files and forward them with
some special mail program?

You've got a hijackware infection, Joshua; possibilities include Vundo and
SmitFraud.

Browse? No, the DBX files must be associated with an OE identity in order
to open them.

There are utilities out there which can extract individual EML messages
(including any attachments); e.g., DBXtract; DBXpress; OEX.
