How do I get XP installed on 2nd drive with Win2K on first

I have been searching all over for an answer. I tried
changing settings in boot.ini, no luck.
I have Win2k on Hard Drive 0 and the second hard drive is
HD1. I see during attempt to install XP-Pro that it isn't
seeing itself installing on HD1 but shows HD0 as the
install goes on, though it is actually installing onto the
2nd HD.
I can select the primary partition on HD1 during install
but after reboot I just get the, Missing hal.dll message
which tell me that it really isn't seeing the install on
the 2nd hard drive. Any suggestions? I have a very stable
Win2000 system going and don't want to disturb it at this
point. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lou,

How are you installing? From within Win2000, or by booting the WinXP CD?

After the first restart, have you looked at boot.ini to see if the paths are
correct?

Hi Lou:

There are various methods to doing it - like re-jumpering the drives
or using the BIOS swap method. Both methods are a bit cumbersome.

I recommend you look at using a boot manager instead since that will
allow you to do the installation in whatever sequence you desire but
still give you the boot options you need.

I'm currently using BootIt Next Generation from
www.terabyteunlimited.com

Great boot manager and does much more. Shareware, try before you
buy, full functional for 30 days.

Hi,

Yep, you're right, it's trying to boot off the second hard drive. Start a
new installation from within the Win2000 system, choose new, then set the
install folder to whatever drive letter the Win2000 system calls the
intended partition on the second drive. Make sure you also disable any AV
software (both win-based and any bios av detection routines). If it repeats,
try manually changing the boot.ini file back to the first drive.

Incidentally, why would you use the floppy set when you can just boot the CD
itself? Or does the machine not support this?

Uh!! My XP Disk isn't bootable, hint hint!!! I just wanted
to play with it and See the difference between it and
Win2K.
I never do upgrades, only clean installs. LOT's less
headaches that way. Thanks very much for your help.

Hi,

Unusual it is then, as most XP CD's are bootable. All retail ones are, so
are most OEM's.

Frankly though, I respectfully disagree on the clean install vs upgrade
argument. I nearly always recommend an upgrade. You can always go back and
do a clean install if it doesn't work out. But, if you clean install first,
well........<g>
