My son-in-law runs Win98 with a dial-up connection, so has asked me
(running XP Home) to download patches for him. When I try the
Update/Catalog site, I can get XP updates but can't seem to access Win98
updates. Suggestions please.
As far as I can tell, windows update is protected and requires ActiveX
controls. This will seek your machine for updates as part of the update
process. And, of course will fail as you don't have 98 loaded. Just
seeking updates for another MS OS may result in no Administrator rights
dismissal. May say you may not have ActiveX installed, even though you do.
As obvious as windows update will work when seeking XP updates.
Inherent to 98 updates are order of install of these updates, incorrect
order can botch and destroy their purpose. Also, some are applicable to 98
only, some to 98SE only, some for both. Some updates do not include that
information, and some may apply to both but only say "98" if seeking updates
manually.

The above is not all-inclusive. Missing obvious to me are the USB updates
for 98 and some more for 98SE. A firewire update not mentioned has an
update that also affects USB in 98SE. All updates can be found by locating
the proper MSKB article with the proper search word(s) or KB article number.

MS plans to end support of 98/98SE/ME and no longer provide security updates
for these MS OS operating system this month. KB articles and currently
available updates will remain available as archived material. XP SP1
support will end in October of this year.
