how do I get the cursor to stop skipping around to another place .

this happens in email, any word processing software, etc. i know there is a
way to lock the cursuor so that it doesn't jump from where it should be, but
i can't remember how to do that.

If you're using a laptop with a touchpad below the space bar, try to
keep your thumbs away from the touchpad. You may have a utility (in
the control panel, maybe) to reduce the pad's sensitivity.
