how do i get the asterisk and sound effect back in office word 20

After saving a document by clicking the "disk" icon, I noticed that as I
continued typing, a little symbol (i believe it was an asterisk) would
appear in the title bar in the files name. I assumed it was to indicate some
modification was made to the file since the last saved. Then clicking the
disk icon the asterisk would disappear and i had a sound effect. After typing
the very next character the asterisk would reappear in file name again until
i saved it to that point. That was good visual reminder to save docs at
constantly throughout the creating of any lengthy files. Now after a major
IBM 4 hour update update (my employer insisted) the asterisk no longer
appears showing any modifications since last "save" and no sound affect.
Please help! What program setting was that and how do the sound and asterisk
back? I've been trying and searching for months for a solution and found
nothing

This has never been a feature of any version of Word AFAIK, though I do
recall something similar in WordPerfect. It's possible, though, that if you
have some sort of document management system in effect, that might be the
source of the behavior.

If there is a form of program management that i unintentionally changed, I'd
appreciate any assistance in getting it back. It obviously was a default
setting because it would just perform this automatically with every document
for the past 3 years. I noticed this change in my word 2003 4 mos ago.

Unless you're operating in a corporate setting, I doubt that there's a
document management system in effect. If this is the case, ask your
corporate IT people. If this is a home or standalone system, then there
wouldn't be much use for a document management system, and you would
certainly know about it since presumably you would have installed it. All I
can say is that if you had this capability in Word, it was provided by an
add-in because Word itself has never (since Word 2.0, anyway) had this
feature.
