How do I get Streets and Trips to actually speak?

I am having problems getting my S&T to speak to me. I have selected
Microsoft Anna - English (United States) as the computer's default voice, and
it works fine when I test it. When I open the Driving Guidance Pane there is
nothing there. Everything else seems to work, but I don’t know how to get it
to talk. (The Directions window opens fine. The GPS pane works.) I am sure
I am missing something, but I have no idea what.
I am using WindowsXP Home, Streets and Trips 2006, with my screen
resolution set to 32 bit.
