How do I get @ in Word Pro 2003. Ctrl-Alt-2 does not work!

Am I missing something here? Why not just use Shift+2 to get the upper
register character - @ ? I can't think of any reason to use a keyboard
shortcut for something that can be typed directly.

Off the top of my head I don't know the French Canadian keyboard but I do
know that some keyboards use Ctrl+Alt (or the right Alt key - AltGr) for
some 'special' characters. If this is a normal key combination for you that
works everywhere except in Word then it is likely that it has been
customized in Word - you don't say what it does do. To 'uncustomize it:

Press Ctrl+Alt+NumericKeypadPlus
The cursor will change to a cloverleaf
Press Ctrl+Alt+2
This will bring up the Customize Dialog
Under "Current Keys" select Ctrl+Alt+2
Click on "Remove"
Click on "Close"

The 'official' way to get "@" on a French-Canadian keyboard is AltGr+2. It
is normal for the right Alt key to be mapped to AltGr on non-US keyboards.

It is also normal, though not guaranteed, for Ctrl+Left Alt to be equivalent
to AltGr. I don't know the actual mechanics of how it works but it is not
Word-related. If you see different results in Word from the two key
combinations then that is because they are being presented differently to
Word from the keyboard and/or the OS. One solution is to explicitly map
Ctrl+Left Alt+2 to the "@" symbol as Suzanne explains.

(Western) keyboards have three (arguably four) states - each of which
produces a different set of symbols (or graphics). They are unmodified, with
Shift modifier, with 'Alternate Graphic' (or AltGr) modifier, and (very
occasionally) with Shift and AltGr together,

If you are mapping to a keyboard which differs from your physical one and
your physical one does not have an AltGr key (for example, a standard US
keyboard, I believe) then the right Alt key is usually mapped to AltGr.

Generally, but not always, Ctrl+Left Alt has the same effect as AltGr (in
your case Right Alt). When it doesn't you must take special action if you
want it to be the case. Suzanne has told you how to set up Ctrl+Left Alt+2
as "@" in Word. What more help do you need?
