How do I get 2 computers to go online with one cable modem?

I subscribe to Optimum Online/Cablevision in New York. As much as I like the
service, I hate the price ($50.00 monthly, plus cable services, comes to over
$100.00 a month). If I get a second cable modem for the computer in the
living room it's another $50.00 bucks a month, no discount! So, my question
is, how do I network these 2 computers? Please keep in my mind I am not
computer savvy, and self-taught. I need these things explained to me as if I
were a 2 year old. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can pick up a cheap and cheerful gateway device nearly anywhere. I
suggest you get one that is also a true firewall - not just a NAT device
(keywords for the latter - "acts as a firewall"). NetGear FR114P or Linksys
BESFXsomething (note the X) are pretty good and don't cost much. You plug
both computers in, it does DHCP/NAT for you as well, so you can share the
same connection. Not tough to set up.

"Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]"
NetGear FR114P or
Linksys BESFXsomething (note the X) are pretty good and
don't cost much.

Where do those fall short of a Sonic or Watchguard, assuming that you
get what you pay for?

They're just fine in general for small/home networks. I've never been able
to get any of the 'consumer' level IPSec VPN capable firewalls to work very
well for VPN, whereas it's a snap on a Sonicwall...logging is nowhere near
as good in the consumer products, and you can't do content filtering/keyword
blocking/antivirus/etc. But they suffice for small shops, as I've said....

Hi
May be this can Help.
Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing -
<http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=105>
Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...? -
<http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=48(>
(These pages were written by me a while ago. Ignore the prices in the links.
The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.)
If you opt to use a Router, the whole thing should look like this:

Jack (MVP-Networking).

I actually just did it really well. I got comcast today and used one of the
cables from my computer to the cable modem and the other one I plugged in to
my network hub. I then setup ICS. I did it this way because I needed to use a
software firewall on my internet connection. After I set up ICS my wifes
computer can get online as long as my computer is connected. If you do not
have a network hub you could use a crossover cable (that you can purchase at
nearly any computer hardware store) as long as it isn't a very long distance.
But I think the max on cat 5 is like 384 feet or something so no worries
there. I hope that this was a help to you.
