Gateway purchased 2002. Windows XP.

I'm trying to figure out where to look to see what
programs automatically start up when I turn the computer
on.

An answer I saw somewhere here was "If you run msconfig
from the PChealth directory this lets you examine all
programs that start when you log in."

Trouble is, I don't see anything labeled "PChealth"
anywhere.

Among other items, I've checked in "Control Panel /
Performance and Maintenance", "Start-up and
Performance / Troubleshooter", "Norton System
Doctor", "Virtual Assistant", and the Gateway help
programm, which gave me this tutorial:

"Startup Programs is located in the Software Environment
category in System Information. It displays information
about programs that start automatically on your system,
even if they are hidden. You can manage Startup by using
Taskbar and Start Menu in Control Panel.

Trouble is, I'm unable to locate any taskbar
showing "Start Menu" within Control Panel.

START|RUN
Type "msconfig" (no quotes) <enter)
Click the START UP tab

Regina,

Click Start/Run and type MSCONFIG. The Startup tab lists the applications which are configured to run when Windows starts.

Sorry to be so dense. Where to I find this "Start/Run"
on which to click?

To Add or Remove items from the Start Up menu (and the System Tray) go to Run and type in msconfig

and okay; then click on Start Up and check or uncheck the items to be changed.

The following link lists which items to keep or delete in the Start-Up Configuration. This will free up RAM and let the computer boot up more quickly.

All right guys... I copied all of your answers into a
document, and edited them into a single "how to" text.
Then I checked out
[http://www.pacs-
portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm]
and
[http://www.pacs-
portal.co.uk/startup_pages/Updates/2004/jan_04.htm]
and was completely overwhelmed by the detailed data.

My question is simply, if I understand you correctly:
when I "un-check" an item in the "Start-up Item" column,
it doesn't disable or erase the program, it just keeps it
from automatically starting up when I turn on the
computer? And, if I choose to not start a program which
I need, I'll get some kind of dialogue box that
says "this application needs such-and-such to run, do you
want to load it now?" (I'm paraphrasing...)

Again, thank you for your patient help.
