How do I find folders with the largest amount of content?

My hard drive is filling up but I am not sure how or why.

Without having to traverse every folder on my hard drive, how can I
identify the folders with the largest amount of content (file size)?

IOW is there some way to sort or view folders by content size? Or is
there an Admin tool perhaps that will help me locate large files (or
a large number of files in a particular folder)?

I personally like TreeSize Pro (JAM Software) for this. It's shareware but
there's a free trial. Recently, someone posted a link to a similar, freeware
product, but unfortunately, I don't have it handy.

Have you taken other steps to reduce the used space on your hard drive?
Using Disk Cleanup and removing all, or all but the most recent restore
points can reclaim a dramatic amount of disk space. Unused programs and
their files, exe. ect. Defrag can help tidy up teh drive.
But, to answer your question, Diskeepr and Everest, both have free versions
and can be found at

There is a freeware program named WinDirStat that scans your drives(s)
and displays a graphic representation of your hard drive, making it
easy to see which folders are using the most space on your computer.

Total Size. It is a great tool. It adds a detail column in explorer that can
show the folder size in B,Kb,Mb,Gb. You can also install Internet size with
it. Internet Size can tell you about the exact location and size of a file on
internet. Both are trials.

Using Disk Cleanup to remove Restore Points is only a temporary measure.
The preset limit, default of 12%, will soon fill.

Unless the limit is also changed, there is really no point in deleting
Restore Points to save space since the space will again be filled.

Agreed, but it can be a useful tool to see if that is a major cause of low
disk space.
