How do I extract segments from a DVD?

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. I need to use my collection of DVD
recordings to take snips in order to create a summary DVD containing pieces
and parts from the other DVDs. I have a R/W DVD drive on my computer, but
I'm not sure which software I need to use to accomplish this. Do I have to
purchase something or does Vista have a built-in product that can be used?

Thanks so much for your time.

We talking about legit Store-bought Commercial Video DVDs? Or your home
made library of home made videos and clips. If it's the later than Windows
Movie Maker should be helpful. If it's the former, with all the protection,
it's easier to use another DVD playback unit, connect it to you favorite
video capture card and record the clips you want. Then edit them with WMM.

Thanks Bob. I'm not sure if they have protection or not, they are DVDs of
church services, they probably have professional equipment but not sure about
protection. I'll try the movie maker. One more question - what's Video
Capture? What's WMM? Thanks Bob.

Windows Media Center (WMC) has an option to record TV channels, or if you
are using a Video input, say from a DVD or VHS player, it will record to a
HD file. I referred to that as Video Capture. (also records the audio
part). WMM is Windows Movie Maker...comes with Vista. It lets you do some
limited video editing, splicing, and timing with voice over and/or music
sync.
