You admit you're a novice user. You admit that I'm an expert. Yet, you say
that you know better than I do about security when it comes to miages. You
say "a little security is enough." That is a statement of a novice. There is
no more such a thing as "a little security" as there is such a thing as
being "a little pregnant." Security is one of those things that either is,
or is not. Would you put a sign on your front door proclaiming that you had
an alarm system without having one? Why, it would stop SOME people from
trying to break in. Isn't that good enough?

And, as I (and many others) have been repeating this stuff over and over for
years, I'm done. If you want to find out more, just read this newsgroup.
Like you should have to begin with. Rudeness goes 2 ways. Asking a question
that you could simply have read the answer to, and expecting people who help
others out of the goodness of their hearts, to re-write their answers for
you is demanding more of the people that help you than you demand of
yourself. And that is certainly rude.

This question always makes me laugh because the very first thing you need to
do to become an expert in this business is to be able to say "don't put them
on the web" in response to "how do I protect my images"

I think it's a very legimate question and that right click javascript has
probably saved a few images from being snagged. Try this - put an image up
on the web with a no right click javascript then ask your wife/girlfriend
(assuming she's not in the business but can use a PC) to save it. Bet she
won't be able to - most users have no clue what a cache is much less how to
find an image in there.

Most of this is an ego issue - people assume because they put something on
the web it's so good other can't wait to "steal" it. In most cases this is
nonsense - there's some people out there who really do have the talent to
produce an image that's worth stealing. Those few will make their living
selling their work and will have figured out how to put their name across
the image. For everyone else get over it - your pictures are not good enough
to "steal" :-)

Excellent reply!

Wish the pros' would do the same.

PJ

From Google:

"Results 1 - 10 of about 16,900 for "disable right click". (0.22 seconds)

"

I think that is the funny part - after seeing this subject come up every day
for 5 years, and seeing some of the pictures that people want to protect,
the question that comes up most in my mind is - "who in the world would WANT
to?"

Or, File > Save As > Web Page.

I didn't say 'anywhere' that I know better than you. Nor did I say the
process was secure. Now you are twisting around what was said. And people
do it every day, put a security sticker on their door or window in hopes it
'may' deter someone. Just because they hope for something, doesn't make it
wrong.

And I want to reiterate. You are rude. Just be nice. It's that simple.
You don't need to talk (type) to people that way.

Oh, and just to make sure you read properly - the question wasn't mine in
the first place. I had posted a different question earlier last night. I
too was just trying to help this person 'out of the goodness' (boo hoo...) of
my heart with a response to someone else's question. Don't assume people
don't read, maybe guess that they might not completely understand.

Thank you Jon for realizing the validity of that person's question, and at
the same time giving him an explanation that will do him some good. I
appreciate it.

Advising people to do something that is not secure is irresponsible. Half of
the messages posted here regarding this topic are corrections of
well-meaning people like yourself that confuse people by speaking without
knowledge, telling them that the impossible is possible. Because you are
inexperienced, you don't understand security on the Internet. For example,
why would someone want to prevent people from copying their images? They
don't want them spread around. Well, all it takes is one person to copy an
image, and then send a copy to 2 of their friends, who send a copy to 2 of
their friends... Note that the image is now being reproduced without any web
site or web page present. But it might appear all over the world. Computers
are excellent at copying files. How do you think all those viruses and
trojan horses get around?

Security is a serious business, and just because you don't see something
doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You don't see the need for "real" security.
I've been programming on the Internet for almost 10 years now. I certainly
DO see it. the other MVPs here DO see it. Microsoft sees it. And I for one
am sick of cleaning up behind people who give bad advice because they DON'T
see it.

In conclusion, I may be blunt, but I don't lead people astray. So, perhaps,
before you go pointing at the mote in my eye you should pull the plank from
your own.

Kevin, you're missing my entire point - still. I may have given information
that doesn' t completely "solve" the problem, but I wasn't rude about it.
Nor am I rude to anyone else about their questions. I completely understand
you don't approve of the option I listed, but it's only an option, not meant
as anything other than that. My signature line shows I'm not an MVP and I
also stated it. I'm sure that person read what I said plus whatever everyone
else had to add and will attempt to do whatever suits him/her best.

Personally - You just may want to realize that your frustration doesn't give
you an excuse to insult someone. You could have simply replied "that won't
solve your problem, here's what I think/know" or "this post is easy to find
answers for, just read back in the postings to find it". But you didn't.
You 'chose' to intentionally insult me instead of handling it like a
professional. And I take offense to it. That's all. It is not what I
expect from a MS site.

This is a discussion group, and that kind of behaviour completely negates
any kind of discussion from happening. Perhaps someone who may be able to
help one day is completely turned off and decides not to return because of
your behaviour. Or gives up trying to become self-employed because they feel
they must be really stupid. It could be anything. As a professional, I
believe it's your responsibility to wear that title MS has given you with
pride and act as someone who is professional would. I'm sorry if that
bothers you. It's what I think. I hope someone doesn't make you feel like
an idiot when you don't understand something. It must have been hard never
having been someone who was new and making innocent mistakes. Must be why
you have no compassion for us well-meaning idiots. I pity you that you think
your helpfulness has to be expressed in such a way.

As an aside, I hope my comments to you cause you to think before you type
next time.

Take a tour through your temp folders with an image viewer...it's definitely enlightening!
