How do I enable megrge cell function

The mere cell function is checked, but dimmed and cannot use it. Most
probably I hit a wrong key on my keyboard. Any tips on how to enble this
funcion again
 
Is the workbook shared?

Is the worksheet protected?

Either one will prevent merging cells.
