how do i enable macros in word 2003

When i start up word i am promped that macros are disabled. I have tried to
go to tool but almost everything is grey and cannot be selected.

This indicates that you have an Add-In with macros attempting to load,
probably from the Office Startup folder (rather than the Word Startup
folder).
